Grade 6

Language Arts

Writing, close reading, and research skills all will be emphasize in the eighth grade Language Arts curriculum. By using the guidelines of the Common Core standards, students will demonstrate a mastery of skills which will enable them to rise to the expectations of continuing education.

The sixth grade science course of study is Earth Science. Content covered includes the earth and its interactions in space, Earth’s history and the processes that changed it, and the oceans and atmosphere and their connections. All students will understand that Earth operates as a set of complex, dynamic, and interconnected systems, and is a part of the all-encompassing system of the universe. Students will understand the part humans play in the complex systems of Earth, as well as their responsibility to preserve and protect the resources it provides. Scientific explorations and discussions, particularly in ecology, are an essential component of the class, and proper protocol and safety is emphasized. Students will be required to use the Internet often.  This is accomplished via our 1:1 Chromebook program.

Grade Six Mathematics concepts are developed in a student-centered learning environment. Students practice skills and extend their understanding to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Technology is integrated in all aspects of instruction. Math notebooks serve as a journal and resource for practice and review. Students are required to sharpen personal math skill levels by using Khan Academy.

The study of mathematics in Grade Six focuses on four critical areas: (1) using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of the system of rational numbers, which includes fractions and negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking. Students also build on their work with area by reasoning about relationships among shapes to determine area, surface area, and volume. They prepare for work on scale drawings and constructions in grade seven by drawing polygons in the coordinate plane.

Grade Six Accelerated Mathematics is offered to students that have demonstrated the highest achievement in Math 5 and Terra Nova testing, as well as a focused and disciplined work ethic. This course of study extends the grade six concepts to a higher level of understanding and introduces grade seven skills.
